Alton is often upstaged by its more successful neighbor, St. Louis. At the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, Alton was once a center of commerce when passing riverboat ships would load and unload cargo to be shipped further inland by rail. It's also my spouse's hometown, so it holds a special significance for me.
